Course Overview
There are two NC Medication Aide courses – one should not be confused with the other. NC Medication Aide certification for working in skilled care nursing facilities requires a 24-hour course of instruction. These individuals will then take a State exam administered through Pearson Vue. This person must also be a certified nursing assistant and listed on the nurse aid registry. These persons desiring to work in skilled nursing facilities may only give out medication under the supervision of a registered nurse and MUST attend a 24-hour course. Medication Aides were approved to practice in skilled nursing facilities (SNF, also known as long-term care) in Senate Bill 622 in August 2005. The law became effective July 1, 2006, and the NC Division of Health Service Regulation (previously known as the State Division of Facility Services) rules for SNF became effective October 1, 2006.
Our Medication-Aide Prep course is designed to help prepare the unlicensed medical person in adult care homes, assisted living facilities, group homes, and rest home sections of long-term care facilities to take the Medication Administration Exam, which is administered by the State. Passing the State written exam is the first step to achieving authorization for passing medications to assisted living patients in smaller facilities. Many of our students are people who are taking this class in order to better prepare themselves for the State exam. Once you pass the State exam, you will be issued a certificate that will allow you to pass out medication to patients in smaller assisted living facilities. Usually, these students try to obtain the Medication-Aide certification to pass out medication to patients in their own family care homes once the home gets licensed.
In class, we will go over the following:
- Training and Competency
- MAR’s (Medication Administration Record)
- Regulations/ Process for Discarding Medication
- Storage of Medications
- Transcribing Orders/ Medication Errors
- Measuring Devices/ Monitoring of Drug Supply
- Medications and Documentation
- Resident Emergencies
- Medication Administration
- Practice Skills Lab
- Abbreviations/ Medication Terminology
- Introduction to Medication Management
- Side Effects, Adverse Reactions, and Medication Errors
- Post-Test and Review
We will also spend time helping each student fill out the required registration form that is sent to the Department of Health Service Regulations along with a $25.00 money order. The Medication-Aide State Exam is $25.00. This money does not go to our organization and is NOT needed on the day of class.
